I will add my own two cents. I too help newbies with BOINC and get quite 
a few questions about credit. This has become my stock reply:

Credits are there to give you a warm fuzzy feeling for having 
contributed to a worthy cause. They are a measure of how
much computing time you have contributed to a particular scientific 
research.

In regards to s...@h, they also do astronomical research via Astropulse. 
And yes, the credit junkies disable this because the turn around of 
credits is too slow.

Jord, I do hope a sabbatical will revive your spirits.
