I've never understood why there is so much of this religious
fundamentalism in the US. It seems to me that in the UK we have as much
diversity of opinion in the general population, the media, and politics
as in the US on every subject except for religion. (Indeed, we have
more diversity of opinion in politics - we still have substantial
numbers of actual socialists here, even if they've lost control of
their own party.) The default religious position in the UK seems to be
"who cares?" I find it very hard to imagine atheists having the
problems in Britain that they appear to have in America: I can't recall
any example of the sort of thing in that article being seriously
presented as someone's opinion, and the movement to force the teaching
of creationism in schools seems entirely alien. Is my perception that
America has a substantial and powerful faction of Christian
fundamentalists accurate or is it an artifact of selective bias in
reporting? And if it's accurate, why is it true of the US but not of the
UK or Europe in general?
