Thanks to Roger, Mike, Rob and 'roya2z4u' for all your helpful advice and 
pointers.

I think it is just the ignition, although I will check for cobwebs, etc as 
Tarn is liberally supplied with spiders and their work. The button does make 
a loud 'click' when pressed, but no spark appears in the little window.

The flue vent is on the cabin side at gunnel level so is fairly well 
protected from squashing situations (or, to put it another way, if the vent 
was squashed I would already be in such deep trouble that it wouldn't matter 
about the vent!)

I would like to have the fridge serviced properly and will approach Roger 
Alsop to see if he can find the time at some point.
