That's a nice gift!  I am sure you will enjoy it.  I have a mounted Garmin
GPS, as a handheld will not give as much info and always need AA batteries. 

 

Mine is a small Garmin 176C and is mounted next to my compass on the port
cabin bulkhead next to the companionway hatch.  My PO had his installed
there so I used his mounting bracket.  I find it difficult to read when
steering the boat, but don't know where else to mount it.  When on a port
tack I can easily see the info, but on Starboard I have to go look at it.
The problem is worse when more heel is present.  It is often difficult to
read in bright sunlight.  I have had no problems with mine and rain and
since it is powered by the boats batteries I never have to worry about low
power. I do keep spare AA batteries on board just in case.
