While I have a wheel, I mount my handheld on the pedestal and love it. However, when I had my C-22, I used a specially made lower crib board to mount it, my fishfinder and adult beverage holder. Here is a link to a similar set-up http://www.catalina22fleet58.org/Learning_Center/lc990501.html
I also run the GPS off an accessory plug and also keep rechargeable batteries in it. We have added a small (about the size of a nice pen set box), portable solar powered battery charger to the boat that charges AA, AAA, & 9V batteries. We got that at West Marine. So, unless the boat's batteries and the sun stop working, we have plenty of power available for the GPS. Cheers! Lance Jones Cruising Captain, Barefoot Sailing Club Catalina 27TR SN 5455 Gaelforce!
