I use a Garmin 38 handheld. That's right, a 38; the damn thing is nine or ten
years old and still ticking along. I have a 12v lighter plug adapter which
keeps the AA battery inventory low. I installed a 12v socket in the coaming
box on the port side. I plug it in there and just prop it up against the
backrest. Not elegant, but, I'm too cheap to buy one of the over-priced
plastic holders.
Okay, it's not a chartplotter, but I get heading, bearing to a waypoint,
speed-over-ground, (still need the little paddle-wheel thingy for
speed-through-the-water), AND velocity-made-good. I also get distance to the
waypoint and ETA. All-in-all, a fair amount of info, assuming, of course, that
I carry a chartbook.
If I was fortunate enough to be gifted a chartplotter, I like those swing-out
mounts that were mentioned by another responder.
