Tom,
If it is a large (not a hand held) chartplotter I have it mounted on
balls, starboard side, to the right of the main cabin hatchway. There
are mounts both sides so that underway the unit can be removed from the
inside mounts and shifted to the outside. You probably can find the
mounts at West Marine. If it is a handheld you'll have to decide other
than hand, lap, or on the cockpit cushions. I think a plastic winch
handle holder or beverage container conveniently mounted in the cockpit
is probably safest.
