Gel, I agree that the cartoon was offensive. Even maybe deliberately offensive. I agree that the editorial decision to run the article (including the images) needs to be discussed to see if it was too far over the line. I don't agree that the publisher should have been fired, but I don't mind that he was. That is the right of the paper's management.
What I don't agree with is that western papers wouldn't publish anything as offensive to Christianity or Judaism. I see it ALL the time in newspapers. You should have seen the cartoons in the local papers here during the height of the Catholic priest pedophelia story. And you should have seen the number of subscribers that canceled their subscriptions, wrote nasty letters to the editor, posted on local forums, and tried to get legislation passed banning such cartoons. I've seen horribly offensive images published in college papers (a picture of Christ nailed ot the cross through his testicles jumps to mind). Do you think that papers around the world don't offend people fairly often? That Egyptian papers don't run cartoons offensive to Jews? That Indian papers don't run cartoons offensive to Muslims? That Pakistani papers never offend Christians? What I am offended by is that you feel free to call me a bigot because I don't agree with you. THAT is offensive. And that is that last thing I have to say to you. Good day, sir. I said GOOD DAY.
