I've done that before but since US-1 isn't an expressway north of Raleigh, it kinda sucks. Stop lights and stuff. I like I-85 - even the part in North Carolina - cuz the traffic is so much more tolerable than I-95. Probably is, it's kinda outta the way to get to I-85 from Raleigh.. You get around that by taking US-1 - but see above :) Charlotte is gettign an Ikea!
