To even argue with that point of view seem like an insult to yourself
if there weren't so many seemingly smart people who actually believe
it. Took me years to realize that.

Just for Robert, I'll give the proper analysis in a nutshell -

As Gen Petraeus said, "we can't kill our way out of Iraq". Therefore:

--------------
Problem
--------------
A 1500 year regional sectarian war whose balanced apple cart was
toppled by America.

-------------------------------------------------
Desired Outcome (i.e., success)
-------------------------------------------------
A stable region at peace capable of governing itself and providing
internal security.

-------------------------------------------------
Proposed Solutions
-------------------------------------------------
(1.) Bush Doctrine. Barricade foreign troops in a "green zone",
attempt to provide security, wait for politicians to solve the
problem.

(2.) Biden Doctrine. Create 3 self-governing regions, one for each
faction, and leave.

So there you have it. That's the best we've got.

Robert believes in betting our military that a non-Muslim, non-Arab
western military force can solve a 1500 year old war by creating a 12
mile secure zone and letting local politicians (the ones that aren't
killed yet) work it out.

If that's not foreign policy via Zeno's paradox I don't know what is.
