Guns are a pretty safe bet now, and always have been. Should the assault weapons ban go through they will go up like crazy again, like double, and if not they can still be dumped at near value if you need to.
You should look into reloading equipment, will save you money on ammo and allow you to custom load. A buddy of mine hand loads everything he shoots, does match service three gun all kinds of competition shooting. Swears by it.
