Really, the two are legally married, and religiously married.

Should be, legally incorporated civil union, and religiously married.

I am fine with government approving the incorporation of a civil
union, and various religious organizations approving marriage,
communion, mass, and any other ceremonies they wish.

...well maybe not human sacrifice.  Oh wait, that might eliminate
marriage again.  I see the problem now.
