Ironically enough the early Church sanctioned same sex marriages. It was 
considered normal until about 1100 or 1200 AD.

So you could consider that the religious arguments are somewhat specious. I 
suspect that the real reason for many people's objections are more 
psychological than religious. In fact I'd also say that the most ardent 
objectors to gay have more than a a few issues regarding their own sexuality. 
While I'm no supporter of Freud (I usually call him Fraud), I think he was very 
accurate about how some use projection in cases like this.
