We run into things like this here frequently. The worst I've ever seen was when 
the elementary school where I was working at the time made a rule against 
birthday parties in the classroom but dedicated half a day to festivities for 
Mexican Independence Day. It drove me nuts. And then there's all the people who 
fly the Mexican flag without (or worse, above) the American flag. That kind of 
thing would be illegal in another country.

For the record, Cinco Di Mayo is celebrated in Mexico according to every 
Mexican immigrant I've ever talked to about the subject. To put that in 
perspective for you, the population here is about 60% Hispanic, with about 3/4 
or so of them being either immigrants or first generation Americans, so I've 
known quite a few people who were actually born and grew up in Mexico.
