I read the story before commenting because I wanted to see if they had the details any different than the commentary on the local radio station. They don't really, though the tone's a bit different -- the radio station said they were told to lose the tshirts or take off, and since it was a fine spring day they took off. No mention of bandannas. That part doesn't make much difference, nor, really, does the fact that the radio station said they wore the flag on purpose.
I have a couple of thoughts: Yes, those students absolutely have a right to display the flag on their person, though I am getting bored with the trendiness of it. This was treated as a violation of the dress code apparently, pretty much like the time my daughter got sent home for wearing a t-shirt with spaghetti straps. I thought that was pretty ridiculous too, but if they are responsible for keeping students safe should we second-guess how they try to do this? I do not think the American flag is incendiary, but consider: Morgan Hill is just at the edge where Silicon Valley exburbs meet Cesar Chavez country. The next town to the south, after Gilroy, is Salinas, noted for the extent of its Mexican gangs. I do not know how this school's boundaries are drawn, but the article does quote a local example of second-generation stupid, an exemplar of not knowing your own heritage weel enough to know when it's being Disneyfied. So I do not know that the fear of a fight was ridiculous. that said, if those parents are so concerned about what the school is teaching them about freedom of speech they need to homeschool and do a better job of it themselves then Now. I have work to do ;P On Thu, May 6, 2010 at 7:10 AM, Sandra Clark <sclarkli...@gmail.com> wrote: > > Reminds me when I was at the Los Angeles Coliseum for some Fourth of July > Festivities.
