"Just curious, but why do YOU think Chevrolet is releasing the Volt?"

Wonderful question.

I would say that they were told to by the government.

Compare the Volt to the Mazda Leaf

The Volt cost 41K versus 32K for the Leaf.
The Volt gets 40 miles per charge versus 100 miles per charge for the Leaf.

I would say it is a bad decision to release a car that is more expensive
than a competitor and get lets for performance.

The whole electric car deal seems fishy to me though. If one switches from
gas to electric, that just means more electric energy needs to be
generated. Barring a sudden rise in nuclear energy, where would the extra
electricity be generated? Is that any more eco friendly or energy
efficient?

I'll admit I don't know much about this issue. There might be a cheap
source for extra electricity.
