I am sure race had a lot to do with Zimmerman's initial suspicions. He also said the kid looked like he was on drugs and was "acting funny".
So there you have it. At a glance, the kid was one of the black punks that had been robbing the place and was a druggie! He was a madman. Zimmerman had no choice but to act for the good of all.
