Obviously, the laws are different in each state, but the all basically suck. In FL, they don't care about the time thing, they figure things on a percentage. For example:
Let's say that while married, family income was $55,000. Now let's say that I made $35,000 and wife made $20,000. That breaks down to approx 63% on my end and 37% on hers.
Now the state has a matrix based on # of kids and income. Say for one kid at $55,000 the number is $800 per month. That is the starting point.
Next the state multiplies that number by the percentage, or for me it's 800x63% = 504.
Now, I must provide insurance, so we can deduct that from what I owe. Say I pay $100/paycheck to cover my kid. You would think that then I get to deduct $100 from the 504, but NO.
In FL, I get to deduct 63% of the amount. Don't ask, because I still can't figure it out.
To make it even better, since I have 3 kids (two are not with first wife), I can only deduct 63% of ONE-THIRD of what I pay out. Bullshit.
So, the system sucks. The courts are completely the wrong place to determine custody, and the systems in place for "support" are not much better.
Since my divorce in 10/2001, I have had to call the sheriff's office twice because my 6 year-old daughter was home alone, I have gone several days without knowing where she was (we have an arrangement where I call her nightly to say goodnight), and she missed so many days of school (in Kindergarten, because her mother could not get her to the bus) that they almost had to hold her back.
However, since any change in custody needs to go through the courts, and I don't have another $25,000 to pay an attorney, I have to deal with it.
