I'm still developing...pretty much routine stuff.
But I've always been really interested in developing Rich Internet
Applications,
however, I hate working in Flash...
It's not that I don't have experience in similar fields...I do 3-D
animation, video editing,
graphic design, all the time...but I have always thought Flash was too
time-consuming
for developing "pretty" animation. Then along came Flash Remoting and
RIA's...that
caught my attention. But not only did I have to develop in Flash, I had to
learn an entirely
new language...ActionScript...
I've just been waiting for a simpler solution to RIA development to appear
and was hoping
that the "Gateways" and "Flash Forms" being discussed had something to do
with remoting.
At this point, I don't see any reason to use "Flash Forms" just because they
look nicer,
which would require a user to have Flash installed, when I can make "pretty"
forms using CSS...
Concerning upgrading...as I said, I haven't had a strong development need to
upgrade with the
routine apps I build, but I was also very concerned that when CF 5 (I think
it was, or perhaps MX)
came out, all of a sudden all the tech talk concerned Java...I know nothing
about Java or
JavaScript...suddenly CF was fast getting out of my league. I downloaded
and installed MX
and didn't really notice much difference with the little experimentation I
did.
I suppose it does all the Java compiling behind the scenes, but still, it
got into areas I had no
knowledge or expertise in and all I saw was many problems and complications
waiting to happen.
Perhaps once Blackstone is able to be fully discussed, I'll see reasons to
go to the trouble
and expense to upgrade. There'll be a lot to learn to jump from CF 4.5.2 to
Blackstone...I just hope
the features (at least the ones I'd benefit from the most) are worth it.
I'd like to be able to build some web-based apps with software-like
functionality, without
having to resort to JavaScript or ActionScript...just within Cold Fusion
server and CFML capabilities...
