As promised, I just got an email from [EMAIL PROTECTED] apologizing for the
confusion and pointing to this
FAQ. Looks like the price is being bumped up to $6k, or more (with more CPUs):
http://www.allaire.com/products/coldfusion/cf5hostingfaq.html

It still looks like the Hosting and Enterprise versions will be identical,
feature-wise. Unfortunately, it doesn't
really answer, in unambiguous terms, who exactly it applies to:
--------------------
What is a "shared server hosting service"?

"Shared server hosting services" refers to the practice of hosting multiple
applications, each created by a
different third party, on a single server. Shared server hosting is different from
dedicated hosting services, in
that a single server hosts one or more applications created by a single third party.
Shared server hosting is also
different from the Application Service Provider (ASP) model in that an ASP rents
access to an application created
by the ASP to third parties who use it. The Hosting Service Provider Edition license
applies specifically to shared
server hosting services as defined above.
--------------------

What about a single company who builds multiple sites for different customers? All of
the applications are being
built BY the same 3rd party, just not FOR the same 3rd party..

The most disturbing part is that hosting providers who purchased a subscription, under
the assumption that their
subscription would allow them to continue to substantially conduct business with the
new CF5, are now forced to
upgrade. Ouch.
