+1 to Apple Data Detectors

Probably most evident in Apple Mail
<http://www.apple.com/business/theater/#tutorial=maildata> but the
technology may be applicable OS-wide so I imagine that a future Chandler
Desktop should benefit from stuff like this. Maybe not within a 2.0
re-architecture but it's a nice wish for the future.

Data Detectors would be more editor-friendly than current 1.0.2 behaviour;
AFAICT it's impossible to single-click within the text of a link without the
link being followed.

Some history, not completely off-topic…

Rewind to 1995! ICeTEe was incorporated within the respected Internet Config
(InternetConfig) for Apple System 7. Apple Data Detectors (ADD) 1.0.2
appeared in 1998, around the time of Mac OS X 8.1, I gather that one or both
of ICeTEe and Internet Config inspired the Internet Address Detectors (IAD)
part of ADD.

Then, Data Detectors were remarkably absent from Mac OS X 10.0 through 10.4.

Since version 10.1 of Mac OS X, ICeCoffEE (modelled after ICeTEe) plugged
the gap.

Fast forward to 2009! Even with Apple Data Detectors in Leopard, there's
nothing that matches the functionality of ICeCoffEE. It's my all-time
favourite piece of software.

Relevance to Chandler Desktop?

* ICeCoffEE probably works only with Cocoa applications.

Relevance to OSAF Bugzilla?

 * keyword: interop

 * enhancement bugs 12564, 12565, 12566 relating to System Services
(inter-application communication)

 * vague sense that System Services may be easier to achieve with Cocoa than
with Carbon.

Disclaimer: I don't do code so I have no idea whether/how Cocoa and/or
System Services might fit with Python-oriented development.

Graham
