It doesn't have to look like a status bar, I was thinking of  
something like addresses in Apple Mail, and other apps under OS X,  
where names autocomplete and once recognized become "blue bubbles"  
that have a context menu. "Remove item from this collection" could be  
part of the context menu there. There was talk about this a long time  
ago, when the vision for "collections" was something more like free- 
form tags that could evolve into full-fledged facets.

I don't think "X" button over the label would be that unexpected,  
especially if Undo worked, but if it's really that far out of the  
common user experience, then OK, it's certainly just a minor thing.
