Ron,
That's great news. Mine was shot. I went and bought a new gas tank for my
66. After a time, I realized I didn't have a gas cap, so I went to NPD where
I bought the tank. I asked for an SS cap since a separate cap is listed for
the SS. They told me I would have to buy the "regular" cap if I wanted it to
fit the tank I bought from them previously. I guess there is a difference in
the SS cap/neck. Of course NPD didn't offer an SS tank. I guess there isn't
enough of a demand to produce another tank just for the SS.
Anybody know what the difference is in the caps?

Hi Larry... the inside of the tank is spotless. The car has been in El
Paso and Phoenix all of it's life to my knowledge.
The trunk pan is rusted out, but that's due to the weatherstrip around the
decklid being wasted, and the guy
I bought it from had tossed a couple of rubber mats in the trunk, then
piled all kinds of crap on top of that...
so when the water got into the trunk, it sat there, couldn't evaporate and
rusted it. aside from a couple
of other minor areas, the car seems to be pretty rust free. I did pull the
sender...that was the other reason for
dropping the tank besides getting rid of the 4 year old gas. The in tank
mesh filter on the sender just crumbled in
my hands when I got it out!

How about the inside of the tank Ron? I know the outside is important,
but the inside even more so. If you haven't yet, take the sending unit
out and take a good look inside. As others have mentioned, all kinds of
stuff makes their way inside. If you have rust problems, POR makes some
stuff you just pour in, swish it around to coat everything, and you're
done. It seals everything so as not to contaminate your fuel supply.

Hey guys... I pulled my tank and dumped the old gas out, and thought I'd
clean it up a big...
The pic shows the tank after I cleaned up a bit over half of one side...
just water and a scotchbrite sponge.
After I took these I used a soft abrasive disk on my die grinder and
cleaned up the crap on the filler neck and the
few spots where the undercoating had gotten 'stringed' across... I may
go ahead and hit the entire tank with the pad...
I was planning on just painting it black before I put it back in... any
other suggestions?? There is NO rust on the tank
at all... I'd thought of POR, but that may be overkill... I don't ever
intend for the car to see the rain... it'll only be driven
every couple of weeks, etc... Any suggestions?
Ron
