Thanks Deanna for your opinions. Like I said, I’m not a vet, but just noticed the trend in postings about seizures. My aunt has a chi/cavalier spaniel mix who is about 2 years old. She suffers from seizures and takes Phenobarbital for them. Very small dose. I’m so sorry for any pet owner who has a dog with seizures. I’ve never seen a dog have seizures but I know it would be terrifying for me if I saw one of my furkids have one. Another question, because I’m not a vet and have never heard of this, what is a liver shunt? I’ve always heard of a brain shunt to prevent seizures but nothing about a liver shunt.

These seem to be the contributing factors...other than injury...that have influenced the increase in seizures. Also poor breeding...as it can be hereditary. Commonly however if it is hereditary, the seizures show by age 2. A dog that has seizures begin after age 2 most always have one of the other contributing factors as the culprit. My opinions! Does anyone know why? I know that chis have a soft spot in their skull at the front might this be part of it? I’m no doctor or vet but just curious to know why they are more prone to seizures. It was some type of phenobarbital. My mother swears Tia got the seizures from the flea medicine she was using. It was the type you put on their backs. I hope this helps.
