  I think the "arrogant know-it-all" is more a character defect.  One
can use a certification to expand aforementioned defect.  We all surely
know a "know-it-all" that dosen't even know what a CCIE is.  

  I know many CCIEs and have seen them all make mistakes as everyone
will.  I don't tell customers this but screwing up is a valuable
learning experience, you tend to remember the problem/resolution much
better like the time I learned about the importance of access-lists to
prevent routing loops by taking down access to 4 Cray supercomputers and
other high end servers.
