It is supposed to be fun guys.ditch the racing crap the causes arguments
about handicaps and handicap adjustments and this and that and just sail.if
some guy or gal makes a boat go faster than yours and you like going fast
then copy what they have done if you can't come up with your own way to
improve boat speed.just sail to have fun, your crew list will grow, everyone
will be happier and your blood pressure will drop and you may even get her
going faster to boot.handicap racing is so far from a perfect system that no
matter what, it will never be right for everyone and you'll never avoid
those who wish to 'cheat" the system.real sportsmen all of them and the
discussion here lately solidifies that.I am older now but I don't think you
could pay me to do a handicap race ever again

Chuck, I went through the same thought process some years back. The PHRF
rules around here (ChesBay) are that you are limited to the length of the J
measurement, which I guess in your case is 15 feet. You may use your spin
pole, but a lighter one would be handier for the genoa (less load). I found
a used pole and am using that - it is a telescoping pole so I put a band
around the pole to show the crew and competitors how far the pole can be
legally extended. 

 

I discussed this with our local PHRF handicapper and rules guru and he
advised me that you cannot use something off the shrouds or toe rail or
anywhere else but the mast. If you had a really long boat hook...... and a
way to attach it to the mast.....

Self policing sport:
We have been racing in non-spinnaker class, and we always have new people
aboard learning.  And I'm still learning myself.  
In a very short race, with drifter light winds, my crew tried to use a boat
hook to hold out the genoa clew.  The boat behind said it was illegal.  I
asked their skipper to confirm and he agreed, so we put it away and rigged
our spin pole, which took us a long time because we had to setup the pole
lift, and are so green.  I always wondered if I was naive about using a boat
hook.  I'd like to rig a 4 ft strut on each side of the boat for pushing the
genoa out.  The spin pole is inefficient, because it is 15 ft long.
Thoughts?

If your regulations limit the pole to J and someone breaks that, then they
should be protested. If you think it is ignorance on their part you can
politely inform them of their error and ask them to RAF for the race. If
they tell you to flip off, protest them. All it takes is one or two people
to get chucked from a race to stop the behavior. 

 

We are for the most part a self policing sport and rely on others to inform
us when we break a rule and we are expected to either accept the penalty or
get protested. Our RC is often staffed by one-design sailors who are not
aware of all the PHRF regs. 

 

You could probably snap a picture with your phone to show the illegal
extension.

PHRF New England is the same; whisker pole length <= J, but many boats with
the telescoping poles are getting away with an unfair handicap advantage.  I
think there's not as much scrutiny on the non-spin fleets.

Some YRAs have moved to giving separate spin/nspin ratings because boats
with a fractional rig and blade jib (usually sprit boats) are viewed as
disadvantaged downwind with no spinnaker as they don't have a big jib to
pole out. From what I have seen mast head rigs pretty much always have the
same spin. 

 

On the Hudson River the base non-spin rating assumes you have a whisker pole
that can be extended to 1.5 of J. if you use a pole that is significantly
less that your largest declared LP (e.g. a spinnaker pole with a 155%) you
can get a up to a 6 sec credit.
