What you describe sounds like a PYI shaft retention collar. I think it is a great addition to the PYI dripless, because it can grab the shaft quite well (as opposed to the retention screws that are supposed to tap into the shaft through the original collar). I know of people who use an extra hose clamp for the same purpose. Not as good but saves you about $30. I have the retention collar.

As far as I can tell, the primary failure mechanism for the PYI is the bellows. It's hard to keep a spare of one of those. The Lasdrop Gen 2 has a semi rigid hose instead of a bellows and terminates with a SS plate which stays stationary. The carbon ring is mounted to the shaft in a manner which does not damage the shaft. This leaves the carbon ring as the rotating piece. In the gen 2 the rotating part attached to the shaft is also a spring pack which is how compression is maintained. Since it is a spring it is also less prone to relaxing over time such as a typical bellows system.
