Hi Dave, Looking at your pictures, I agree that something is scoring the original Offshore Spars SS cage. Probably not a soft halyard, but a harder SS Schackle. My boat, Hull #2 has the very same cage and no chafing.
Your pictures don't show it in it's proper place. I question if the cage is properly attached tight to the mast? It should be all the way up and bolted to the underside of the mast top plate. Then a screw goes through the hole in the bottom of the cage, probably a flathead SS. I would also check that the halyard restrainer isn't too close to the mast. I would sand the damaged area of the cage and polish it using finer and finer wet sandpaper, and then I would check for a fair lead to the restrainer. https://www.google.com/search?q=harken+halyard+restrainer&rlz=1C1AWFC_enUS839US839&oq=halyard+restrainer&aqs=chrome.3.69i57j0l7.8385j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 If you don't have a restrainer, the grooved area may have been caused by a snapshackle pulled too far up. You can change to a smaller schackle and protect that with a plastic stopper ball. All of your halyards need a plastic ball to stop to protect the schackles from getting pulled into the sheeves https://www.westmarine.com/buy/sea-sure--3-16-red-stopper-ball-5-pack--P002_065_006_026?pCode=9201351&cm_mmc=PS-_-Google-_-GSC%3ENonB%3EProduct%2520Type-_-9201351&product_id=9201351&creative=108421553284&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=Cj0KCQjwybD0BRDyARIsACyS8ms2s1epLHjrIHWcuLGLzhtyJI1CfuhJujlzK5P-D658wJALRLHqqS0aAnYTEALw_wcB Chafe of genoa halyard can come from a wrap around the furler section, so check that there are no sharp parts there. Last note: Agree the list is awesome and a strong reason I bought my boat in 2002. Thanks all.
