Personally I think those preset installations which could be part of
the normal package would be a great help to reduce the many
questions/screwups newer users get and thats presumably where the
greatest impact will be. The easier mandrake is to use as a starter
pack the more people will select it.
Very likely if you have many customers you will keep making your
own 'standard' install anyway, you get acustomed to doing things a
certain way....

On the other hand if there is a lively discussion about what the best
way is to do it, you may like the preset way enough to use it (could
be your own....or similar enough).

I am running a redhat , a mandrake (reinstalled since yesterday) and
suse box at home, and the redhat purely as the guys on my isp and ftp
run redhat so its easier to be sure we have the same things and are
talking about the same thing.
Suse as its widely used here for some applications so I need a box capable of running
it...
Nice icons by the way... And I like the SAX or is it SOX and its
YAST.
I know, propriority but if something similar like that existed under
Mandrake...

However if for instance there is a nice and stable/secure way to run an
internet machine (ie that kiosk machine) I donot mind at all if thats
a totally deviating setup.
As long as all the ones setup are the same (g).
In our own case hardware would probably be very similar for new
machines so once one is working they are ALL working.
But if it gives problems setting the software up/maintaining it, my
partner would get it dumped quick.
Especially as he hasnt got a clue what Linux does what windows doesnt.
For him the one giving a headache is the one which goes... and he is a
bit short tempered.

Same with the mentioned multimedia home linux system, nobody needs
firewalls, 20 languages and stuff like that.

One thing required though is a much better support for the latest
hardware like video cards, sound cards, dvd cards.
And a more convenient way to set things up.
You may not like windows but hardware can install a lot easier and if
we sell a system its painful to get situations where selected hardware
doesnt work... Also happens under windows though...

If any of those packages become available which I mentioned in the
other email, I will be more then happy to testrun them myself.
I have spare systems I can grab and my kids make good guineapigs (g)!
My oldest daughter can reinstall mandrake herself (selects all options
but so what, drive is big enough), and she uses root (!) for playing
the games like the repton and other stuff..
Sofar not one corruption but their 95 box is a disaster...
And no problem sticking a box with internet stuff in a place as a test
system to see what customers say of it.
I am 100% in favour of having some specialised packages as it could be
much easier to use for normal systems and it could be a bigger seller
then the normal cd...
I mean how many people on this list will BUY a cd????? With manual???

Best regards,
