Now that is good advice, Jan. Some of the best I see here. Always check,
A
oil change can cause particle to break lose from a corner or other hiding
place. As the man said look for why first. Warren

Dennis,

Take a quick inventory of your engine's internal parts- crank, rods,
camshaft and bearings made of steel; case parts are made of magnesium.
The cylinders and valves are steel, leaving the pistons for the only
substantial aluminum.

Is the aluminum a fine powder, or slivers or flakes? If it's aluminum I
think the only possible source is a piston.

I used to be an engine shop manager for an airline here in Fresno, and
both Pratt & Whitney and Garrett recommend cleaning the filter and
running the engine at 80% power for 30 mins, then re-check the filter. If
the particles decrease or disappear you have no problem. If the particles
increase then you have to check it out. After cleaning out your filters,
take it down to the end of the runway and do a ground run for 20 mins or
so at 2000 rpm, then re-check.

If it's aluminum, sounds more like a top end problem, as the bottom is
steel/magnesium.

There are plenty of mid-time C85s in the trade-a-plane for around 1500 -
2500 dollars.
