I kind of like the idea of arming them. Rubber bullets are fatal in close
quarters and will not likely penetrate anything that could cause
depressurization. Even if they aren't fatal a shot to the face will
incapacitate them. Tasers are another possibility. But, then again you
have to worry about the terrorists and their weapons. A trained sky
marshal
will know when and when not to use his weapon. Pilots could also be
trained
to lower their altitude if at all possible. I also like Leslie's idea
about
arming pilots, but there needs to be some thought in how to do it. You
don't want their guns to be added to the arsenal that the terrorist is
able
to get access to on a plane. Incidentally Leslie, loved the letter to the
editor in the September issue of Flying! I also think Wayne's suggestion
of
the steel reinforced doors is a must. They may even want to install
videocom between the cockpit and cabin to allow conversations between the
crew and pilots without opening the door. An SOP should be implemented to
keep the door closed from the beginning until the end of the flight. It
should be treated as a secure area. It would also allow the crew to see
who
they are talking to. Now, I'm sure all these measures can be overcome,
but
I can guarantee that it will create a bit of a deterrence. Hijackers seem
to always look for the easy targets. The goals is simply to not make it
so
easy.

Guns and pressurized aircraft do not mix whether in a sky-marshal's hand
or
a crew members hand. It brings to mind an incident in a B-29, not in a war
zone. The gunsight was bolted into the plexiglass shelf with 5/16th bolts,
the gunner's seat to the floor with 3/8th bolts. A crack came into the
plexiglass sight port and the pressurization blew it out. The gun-sight,
the
gunner and seat was pulled from the airplane and anything loose in the
central gunner compartment was
sucked out the hole. The smallest hole in a pressurized compartment will
open the airplane up like a can opener. The martial arts thing would be
the
best bet, but then the terrorist has to be close enough for that to work.

| I agree with you, Wayne. I'm happy to hear that the armed sky marshalls
| will likely be back, but I'd like to know why there isn't a steel
reinforced
| door to the cockpit. I also think the pilot and first officer should
carry
| side arms. If there's unauthorized personnel in the cockpit, shoot
| (carefully, of course) first and ask questions later. The
responsibility
is
