I have an EGT and it works but does not peak as sharply as on larger engines. I run around 75 degrees rich of peak for climb, but at cruise it works out better to lean for smoothness just rich of peak. The higher you go, the more critical the setting becomes. I've taken the Alon to 12.5 and it peaks sharply, but more by "feel" than by EGT reading. My mixture control is a TSO'd vernier - much easier to adjust than a straight push-pull control.
