Greg,

Try one of the places that rebuilds instruments first (check the ads in
Trade-a-Plane).  You should be able to get your original overhauled for
less than
$200 and if it is just faded markings, the cost should be much less.  This
way you
get to retain your well made original instrument and it will look and
function like
new.  I still have my original altimeter from '46 and after seeing the new
plastic
"Chinese" instruments, I can't imagine they will still be around in 50
years.
