Reply from David: My altimeter was rebuilt last year and IFR Certified for approximately $180 because the case was leaking. I had another rebuilt a few years ago for slightly less. I was told that the older three-bellows altimeters are better than the new ones and can be rebuilt as long as parts are still available.
No matter what your source, replacement needs a log entry signed by a mechanic. I doubt you will get one to sign off a non-TSO'd instrument when a TSO'd one is available. My recollection is that a TSO'd instrument needs a 337 because it needs to be proven equal to what is installed - a TSO'd instrument is presumed to be of equal specs to the one being replaced (and also on the equipment list), it's a minor repair, not requiring a 337. Or, check first with your local friendly FAA FSDO who will probably need to sign off a non-TSO'd altimeter. Oh or keep the old one and buy a rebuilt one or a new one +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Is it true or not that you need to use a TSO'd altimeter? The cheapo ones are not TSO'd and I thought that at best you needed a 337 and field approval to use one. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ There seem to be two wildly different options for replacement. There are under-$200 units of Chinese manufacture and well-over-$300 units made in the good old USofA. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ __________________________________________________________________________ ______ To unsubscribe from this list please send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] _____________________________________________________________ Check out the new and improved Topica site! http://www.topica.com/t/13
