In shorthand: certain multi-generational copies of the Z film seem to show
the driver, William Greer, turning and shooting JFK with a .45. Other
prints, most recently the digitally enhanced version on the "Image of an
Assassination" video, show clearly that this is not happening. The
provenance and the extent of tampering with even the original print of the Z
film is still hotly debated in the research community, however. Add this to
the fact that Greer does slow the car down during the time of the shooting
and that photos exist of an FBI man picking up a .45 slug on the opposite
side of Elm just after the hit, and you can see why the driver-did-it theory
still circulates. The person who originally set out to investigate this,
Lars Hanssen, ultimately decided it was wrong. The person who popularized
the theory, William Cooper, apparently still believes it is right.
