I have no doubts about YMMV, but for the benefit of the discussion, I
could add a little. When I moved IMail/Declude from 2000 to 2003
temporarily as part of disaster recovery, I was able to benchmark the
difference in CPU on an exactly identical system except for the RAID
card (went from an LSI 320-2 maxed with memory on 2000 to a zero
channel Adaptec 2010s on the 2003 box). I was surprised to see around
a 10% improvement on the 2003 box. While this could have been the RAID
card, one would have generally expected it to go the other way if that
was the case.
I have of course tweaked 2003 by shutting off unnecessary services and
even turning off DEP. I believe that DEP can make a difference in
performance. I can't comment on comparable utilization of apps outside
of mail servers since everything else tends to only scratch the surface
of my CPU's on the other boxes. Clearly things are different enough
that one might trigger certain behaviors one one instead of the other.

Hi Matt,
All of my servers are 2003, but I
have had seen some small stability issues with 2003 where I didn't with
fully patched 2000. Also, I'm see 10-20% higher average CPU on 2003
with all other software the same. I'm also seeing issues with IMail
and Declude on 2003 that I did not see at all on 2000.
I agree that it's more secure by
default (though I had locked 2000 down just as tightly), and that 2003
should be the choice over 2000, but there's no question in my mind that
it is more bloated and not as stable.

Webmail Problem
Darin,
2 cents here. I have had very, very few issues that may have been
related to Windows 2003, and some of my servers get pounded on. It is
the most stable platform that I have used to date, and it is definitely
more secure by default than 2k. YMMV of course.

Ugh... move it to a server OS. Windows 2000 or 2003. While I don't believe
Windows 2003 to be as stable as Windows 2000, it will be easier for you to
manage and secure, so I'd go with that.

He means the server. What server OS are you running? Windows 2000 or
Windows 2003. So far all reporting the problem are running Windows 2000
server.

By any chance are you running this on Windows 2000? If so do you
possibly
have terminal services installed in application mode? Highly doubtful -
but
I figured I would ask.
For those that may have a TS server I noticed a string of forum posts
that
indicates one of the MS Patches from August "KB917422 MS06-051 no longer
allows you to read or write INI files from anywhere other than the
Windows
folder"
I only bring this up because I know Imail uses an ini file for web
messenging and its possible some may have TS in app mode - you never
know.

Thanks Darin. I did install the KB917953 patch from June. I also
installed 4
more Windows updates yesterday and that's about when the problem
started. I
removed those patches today and did a reboot of my server. I'm still
experiencing the same issue with the webmail. Any more suggestions?

Check postings on the IMail newsgroup today. It has been reported to
be
an
issue with KB917953 from June. Most likely something in this weeks
patches
in combination with KB917953 triggered this.
