I'll work on 4.2, after that, people can merge it to 4.1.

Agreed conceptually.  Let's be clear though...  these users have been stranded 
for many versions now.

I'm OK with focusing on fixing this for 4.1.0...  but we need someone(s) to 
commit to doing the work.
