I've checked the tests, and they where broken in a trivial way, therefore I am relatively confident that THRIFT-5344 could go into the release. Your PR with a small extension is at https://github.com/apache/thrift/pull/2319 I'd be happy for a review, but the change is almost trivial (turning a pointer into the corresponding object), so I'd also just merge it tonight if nobody objects (and no surprises come from the CI).
