Regarding text rotation, you might want to take a peek at
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/x-faq/part7/section-45.html
In there is a reference to xvertext, which is what xfig uses, that can
render text rotated at arbitrary angles on X. AFAIK it uses a buffer to
render the string, but the results aren't all too bad (better than 'nuthin
in any case).
Rotated text is something I really would like to see in Dia, if I had more
time I'll look into it myself, but I already have too much to do at the
moment.
