Yeah, I can see how giving it a facelift (like any other product) might be a marketing strategy. Would I'd love to know is if the game sells better.
That aside, I can't decide whether or not it makes the game any easier or more efficient to play. I'd have to try it out I suppose. I'm a bit biased though because in my mind the Monopoly board is a pretty old, and established tradition.
