Some expired names have value because the type-in traffic they generate can be monetized.

Prove it. Even for the most pie-in-the-sky (sex.com) overpriced domains, I do not believe there's significant type-in traffic. People type into search engines, not browser bars.

As a matter of fact, people have been using tucows batch registration to grab deleting names for a long time. Tucows is way behind the curve on this.

Behind the exploitation curve? You bet.

If tucows can get their act together and run a honest auction, they can still catch up and dominate the after market.

Market., shmarket, farket. Why not monetize your dirty diapers?

There's a buck to be made by some exploitative farqers every minute, I guess. I'd rather sleep at night and leave sex.com (for instance) available for someone who happens on it to provide legitimate sex information, and maybe saves a life or two with it.
