Any decision that is made with the customers full and repeatedly-verified understanding takes the customer's best interests into account and is ethical.

For some, that will mean auto-renewal and auto-rebilling.

For some, that turns into the "forgotten charge" on the credit card, so it becomes more approriate only to renew on instructions.

What is unethical in either case is for the registrar to make a profit off the non-renewal by selling the domain.
