People do both. My "first path" when trying to find a web site for $COMPANY is to type in "$COMPANY.com"... only if I get something a little wonky do I both using my searchbar.

For instance, I picked a company at random just now. Looked out my office window, saw the Milford Plaza hotel. www.milfordplaza.com ... bing.

Just because you rely on Google/Yahoo/whomever to direct your traffic, doesn't mean it's the path-of-first-choice for everyone else.

That said, though, I do agree that the domain names should be allowed to expire gracefully, and put back into the pool for "the next random person who asks for it" instead of "whomever has the deepest wallet".
