Wouldn't it make sense to add an option of really deleting a domain from 
the registry? This way any customer who wants to really drop his domain 
and not auction it could do that, with "merely" expiring domains still 
going to an auction.

BTW: I found the renewal system for gTLDs surprising from the beginning. I 
tend to see domains as "subscriptions" and in Germany most subscriptions 
just automatically renew, as do domains.
