We should look at where Windows drivers are going, not where they are today. There are a bunch of reasons why current Windows drivers have single preference panels. From a systems point of view, Windows doesn't do a great job of virtualizing graphics resources, so the user is forced to make some tradeoffs at the system level. And for most Windows users there's only one 3D application running at a time -- the game they're currently playing. When Longhorn comes along and 3D hardware gets used for GUI and video and other functions, you can bet that the preference panel situation in Windows is going to get a lot more complicated. This is a case where we can get ahead of the Windows development curve by having a little more foresight.
