The problem was effectivly the missing newline after all.  But the
strange thing is that the newline is missing for a *long* time and
snapshots have been built since then. So I think the sudden problem must
be related with a new upstream C pre-proccessor with stricter demands.
(I do 'apt-get upgrade' quite often on the machine where the builds are
made which has Debian unstable, so I have no idea which version may have
caused this)
