I'm prone to agree with others that I rarely visit either LiveJournal's
home page or portal page. I go straight to my journal, the support
board, and my friends page.
That being said, if the portal and the home page were one and the same,
the following things seem important:
- Page should not duplicate links from the site scheme.
- A quick post option
- Upcoming birthdays
- A "since you last visited block" containing the number of friends,
syndicated, and community updates (along with appropriate links) since
you last visited.
- Link to the most recent news posts
- Perhaps a link list that you build from pages you visit that aren't
linked directly in a site scheme (support board, admin console, other
admin tools, etc)
