Personally, I don't find the spotlight, tips, friend updates or Writer's Block to be any helpful unless they could be toggled on/off if someone wanted to keep them on their version of the site page, like being able to switch site schemes. The most recent comments within the user's journal being displayed on the front page is actually more helpful than birthdays in that the user can be reminded of what has been said in their journal in case they have emails from other sources piling up or if they can't keep track of everything in their online life.
As a whole, I find the following things more enjoyable as an experience on LiveJournal that could be possibly implimened on DW: - Most recent journal comments. - Announcements and/or News. - Quick update. - Account status information. - Summary of the friends page. Maybe as things are filled in and more people come to DW these could all be given the option of being added/removed from the front page on a most/least used module basis. I find it more enjoyable to customize my experiences on the sites. :)
