You're not alone. My bookmark for LJ is set to the full sitemap, because LJ keeps making that harder and harder to reach. By having my bookmark set to the full sitemap and having LJLogin log me in automatically, I never have to see any of the annoying crap on that page like the ads that aren't ads because they're pushing X new feature and the prompts for stuff someone else thinks I should write about and the comments that are already in my email. In my opinion, the most useful start page is the full sitemap, which tells you where to go to get to anything you might possibly want to reach. The portal is cluttered and full of garbage. The only things that interest me on the portal at all are birthdays and announcements.
