As a rough comparison, about 1973, I made a little quiz. It said "Find the mean (average) (add up and divide) of these numbers. 4 5 6 7 7 5 4 6 3 3 "
I gave the quiz to 25 4th graders in a parochial school on the second day after they were exposed to that concept and to 35 sophomores and juniors in a Psych Stat class after about 1 and a half hours of the first session.
